SUMMARY:Introducing the Declaration for Responsible and Intelligent Data Practice
DESCRIPTION:Find out what the Declaration is\, why we need one\, what are the next steps\, and how you can get involved.\n\n\n\nIn a world awash with data\, the ability to make the right decisions regarding the use of data becomes increasingly more complex and difficult. Our capacity to create\, collect and analyse data from disparate sources\, using advances such as machine learning and artificial intelligence\, creates challenges that are not only technical\, but legal and ethical too. \nCo-designed by Open Data Manchester with expert practitioners from public\, private\, academic\, civil-society and voluntary organisations\, the Declaration for Responsible and Intelligent Data Practice seeks to differentiate ‘the good’ from ‘the bad’ among those that use data. \nIn these sessions\, Open Data Manchester’s CEO Julian Tait will explore: \n\nWhat the Declaration for Responsible and Intelligent Data Practice is\nWhy we need a shared vision for data across Greater Manchester\nHow it was developed and what the next steps are\nHow you can get involved.\n\nThere’ll also be time to answer any other questions you might have. \nRead the Declaration. \nNote – this is a repeat of the events we previously held in October and will cover the same conent. \nAbout the Declaration \nThe Declaration was co-designed over the 18 months to September 2020 with the generous support and expertise of practitioners from public\, private\, academic\, civil-society and voluntary organisations. \nIt’s aim is to act not only as a statement of intent\, but also as a means for developing and maintaining best practice in Greater Manchester. \nBecause it was created as part of a collaborative and deliberative process\, it offers a common vision for what best practice in data for Greater Manchester\, and everywhere\, should look like. \nIts aim is to act not only as a statement of intent\, like the ‘first do no harm’ principle found in medical ethics\, but also as a means for developing and maintaining best practice. \nAbout Open Data Manchester CIC \nOpen Data Manchester is a not-for-profit formed from a diverse group of open data advocates in 2010 that supports organisations to release data and helps people use it. \nWhether working in partnership or on standalone programmes\, we promote good data practice through expert advice\, strong advocacy\, participatory events\, state-of-the-art research\, technical support and interactive training. \nopendatamanchester.org.uk \nOpen Data Manchester on Twitter.

SUMMARY:ODM\, HER+DataMcr and PyData Mcr present: DATA HORROR STORIES!!
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of the year again\, so we’ve teamed up with PyData Mcr and HER+Data MCR to bring you another night of DATA HORROR STORIES!\n\n\n\nDo you have a tale of bad stats\, strange correlations\, malicious intent or plain stupidity? Join us and share your Data Horror Stories! \nToy Story 2’s production famously hit a snag after losing a couple of months worth of work due to an accidental and erroneous command being executed. \nIn 1999 the Mars Orbiter Climate spacecraft crashed because engineers used computer software which produced output in non-SI units of pound-force seconds (lbf·s) instead of the SI units of newton-seconds \nAnd in 2003\, Manchester City Council received a £7\,500\,000 budget cut due to an error with the census data\, which essentially lost 25\,000 people. \nData Horror Stories is a night for sharing YOUR scary data-based tales. \nWe have a number of 5minute slots available\, so if you have a story or cautionary tale that you’d like to share\, drop an email to samopendatamanchester.org.uk. \nThere’ll also be some quick-fire slots on the night. \nJoin us for a night of data-based cautionary tales and share your stories and experiences. \n— \nOpen Data Manchester CIC is a not-for-profit formed from a diverse group of open data advocates in 2010 that supports organisations to release data and helps people use it. \nFollow Open Data Manchester on Twitter or visit their website. \nHER+Data MCR is a community working to connect\, inspire\, support and empower the NW UK’s Women in Data! We meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month. \nFollow Her+Data MCR on Twitter or on Meetup. \nPyData MCR is the Manchester chapter of the International PyData Community. For Manchester based data people\, to share and learn new things. All open data tooling welcome. \nFollow PyData MCR on Twitter or on Meetup. \n—- \nHow to join \nThis event will take place via Zoom and will be streamed onto YouTube. After signing up\, details on how to join will be shared nearer to the time of the event. \nAny other questions? \nDrop us an email on samopendatamanchesterorg..

SUMMARY:Virtual Data Expedition with Open Data Manchester & 360 Giving
DESCRIPTION:Join Open Data Manchester and 360Giving this August for a two-week Virtual Data Expedition to improve your data skills.\n\n\n\nDo you wish you had more confidence with data? Do you want to use data to better inform what you do? \nWhatever your data skills\, wherever you are\, you’re invited to join a Virtual Data Expedition being led online for the first time by Open Data Manchester\, with the support of charity data experts 360Giving. \nOver two weeks in August 2020\, you’ll work with a team of fellow travellers from different walks of life to learn how to use data by taking on real-life challenges. \nWhat is a Virtual Data Expedition?\nA Data Expedition is a way of working with data from ‘start to finish’ – from identifying a question you have\, to finding and using data to try to answer it\, to telling a story with it. \nThe two-week expedition involves a series of guided workshops led by trained facilitators where participants\, who may be from the community\, policy or technical backgrounds\, go on a journey of discovery together. \nThe very first Virtual Data Expedition is an online version where people can take part at their own pace. There will be four two-hour sessions over two weeks\, plus a final presentation session where teams will share what they’ve done. \nTeams will work together outside of these times to make sure they’re making progress. \nWho is the Data Expedition for?\nData Expeditions are for everyone\, from total beginners\, to mixed-ability groups\, or experienced data users. Each person is given opportunities to contribute in ways that play to their strengths. \nFor the first Virtual Data Expedition\, we are looking for people from the north of the UK to participate\, since it will focus on local issues. But if you are from further afield and you want to join in\, you are very welcome! \nWhat can I expect to get out of it?\n\nNew data skills\nThings you can show off or use – like visualisations and stories\nAn understanding of how to address your personal data knowledge gaps\nGetting to know new people\n\nWhat do I need?\n\n4-6 hours a week for two weeks\, including workshops and time to meet as a team\nA laptop or a PC (you will struggle to do this on a tablet)\nA good\, stable internet connection for video calling software\, such as Zoom\nAccess to Google Docs\nA desire to collaborate and learn\nOptional: a data-based problem or question that you want to explore\n\nWhen will it happen?\n\nWorkshop 1: Tuesday 11 August\, 10am-12pm BST (GMT+1).\nWorkshop 2: Friday 14 August\nWorkshop 3: Tuesday 18 August\nWorkshop 4: Friday 21 August\nFinal presentations: Tuesday 25 August\n\nApart from the first session\, times for the workshops will be decided by the group as a whole. Participants will then work in teams at their own pace. \nHow do I sign up?\nSign up for the kick off session here\, fill out the form and we’ll be in touch will more details! \nQuestions\nIf you’re interested in taking part and have any questions – or if you’re not sure if a data expedition is right for you – then please don’t hesitate to drop us an email: sam@opendatamanchester.org.uk. \n— \nAbout Open Data Manchester CIC\nOpen Data Manchester is a not-for-profit formed from a diverse group of open data advocates in 2010 that supports organisations to release data and helps people use it. \nAbout 360 Giving\n360Giving helps organisations publish open\, standardised grants data\, and empower people to use it to improve charitable giving.

SUMMARY:Pick N Mix 11: accessing open data through APIs
DESCRIPTION:Open Data Manchester presents Pick N Mix: free online tasty treats to power up your data skills. This week: accessing open data through APIs\n\n\n\nA season of weekly online workshops to introduce you to new tools\, resources and skills to help you on your data journey. Sessions are run by members of the Open Data Manchester community and available for anyone to participate. \nWeek 11: Accessing open data through APIs\, with Reka Solymosi\, University of Manchester. \nOne of the principles of open data is that it is accessible and usable. A way that organisations provide such access to their data is through the use of APIs (application programming interface). \nIn this session we will: \n\nDiscuss the use of RESTful APIs for the purposes of accessing open data from the web\nExplore direct calls to an API\nExplore using API wrappers (both Graphical User Interfaces and code)\n\nThe session is aimed at those with little to no experience with APIs\, but hopefully you will get something out of it no matter the level of experience. \nWhat you’ll need \nIt will be possible to follow along a lot of the content with just an internet browser. However\, Reka will also be demonstrating calling APIs from within R\, so if participants have R and R Studio\, they can follow that part too. However it’s not a requirement. \nFor those who want to follow along the parts of the session in R\, Reka will be using the following packages: \n\nlibrary(jsonlite)\nlibrary(osmdata)\nlibrary(ggplot2)\nlibrary(sf)\nlibrary(readr)\nlibrary(dplyr)\nlibrary(tidyr)\nlibrary(patchwork)\n\nMore info \n\nReka’s website https://rekadata.net/\n\nAbout the Programme \nPick N Mix is a tasty selection of free weekly online workshops run by the ODM community. Each week you’ll be introduced to a tool\, resource or skill in a fun\, friendly and informative way. \nView other sessions in the series. \nSessions will be carried out over Zoom\, and will be interactive. Whilst the format may vary from week to week\, you can expect a mixture of presentation and practical exercises that you can either do during the session supported by the tutor\, or in your own time. \nPick N Mix is a free to participate community delight\, with all sessions recorded and accompanying materials made openly available. \nAs each session has a different flavour\, it’s worth checking out in advance any skill/knowledge requirements or if it’s recommended to install software in advance. \nAttending one of our online events: \n\nOnline rooms will be open at 6.20 and sessions will start prompty at 6.30.\nPlease take a minute to read our code of conduct.\nIf you have any questions please get in touch.\n\nAbout Open Data Manchestert CIC: \nOpen Data Manchester CIC has been leading the way in open data practice since 2010. We advocate for responsible and intelligent data use for a fairer and more equitable society\, and support individuals\, communities and organisations to do so through a wide and varied programme. \nWe host a variety of events throughout the year\, including monthly Open:Data:Night meetups\, workshops and training. \nOpen Data Mancheste CIC is proudly supported by Luminate and the Co-op Foundation.
