Data Cooperative Working Group

The Data Cooperative Working Group is an informal international forum convened by Open Data Manchester and the Aapati Institute for practitioners, researchers, policymakers, technologists, community organisations and anyone interested in the development of data cooperatives as a democratic and accountable model for collective data governance.

The group brings together people from across the UK and around the world who are exploring how data can be governed in ways that are fair, transparent and community-led. It provides a welcoming space to share knowledge, challenge ideas and learn from emerging practice.

Since its launch, the Data Cooperative Working Group has explored how data cooperatives are established and governed, examples of data cooperatives in practice, legal, technical and organisational frameworks, and wider approaches that enable pro-social and community-led data sharing. Discussions have also examined mutual approaches to data governance and stewardship, alongside emerging policy, research and international developments.

More recently, members have contributed to the development of the Data Cooperative Handbook – A Practitioners Guide, bringing together practical knowledge and lessons from those working to develop democratic approaches to data governance.

The Data Cooperative Working Group meets online every two months. Each session typically features presentations from invited speakers, case studies and open discussion, giving participants the opportunity to share their own work, ask questions and explore new ideas. Whether you are actively developing a data cooperative, researching new governance models or simply interested in the potential of collective data stewardship, you are very welcome to join us.

Get involved

The Working Group is open to anyone with an interest in democratic approaches to data governance, regardless of experience or background. It offers an opportunity to connect with an international community of people developing new thinking and practical approaches to data stewardship.
